There are so many car enthusiasts out there who aim to add everything to their vehicle that they can, whether it’s an upgraded muffler or a cat-back kit. The thing is though, a lot of these “enthusiasts” have no idea how these additions work, and they just know it’ll turn heads when they list off all the specifications they’ve added to their vehicle. However, with that being said, that fact made us at American Muffler wonder why they want to add these additions, but don’t understand how they work.
The answer is simple. It’s because exhaust system are deceivingly simple. Although you may think your exhaust pipe is just like the rain gutter downspout of your car, there’s a lot more to understand.
Exhausts Systems 101
To understand the gist of an exhaust system, think of the engine. The engine is simply a pump that converts fuel and air into exhaust gases, heat, and the vehicle’s overall motion. When you vehicle is idling along, the engine isn’t producing much exhaust or heat, but when you’re at full throttle, it produces a vast amount of both.
The exhaust system is what prevents the toxic fumes and gases your car produces from entering the cabin of the vehicle. This makes a proper working exhaust a crucial element to any car. Although vehicles that are produced today churn out less exhaust than ever before, they’re still capable of producing a deadly amount of carbon monoxide.
The Vehicles Heat
If there are two things we understand about thermodynamics it’s that,
- Hot air is less dense than cold air
- Hot air traveling down the exhaust pipe inevitably cools off
These two facts make developing the perfect exhaust surprisingly difficult because you need a system that can successfully carry toxic gases away from the cabin, but if the gasses cool too quickly, they’ll become harder to push out of the exhaust pipe. This will ultimately reduce the flow of the system, preventing your vehicle from properly accelerating.
